Dutchess County continues to focus on incentivizing food waste reduction by offering an expanded grant program for municipalities and public schools.
Types of Projects
- In-Vessel Aerobic Composter
- 50% reimbursement for the purchase, ancillary installation costs, and outreach materials.
- Pre-existing food waste drop-off sites are eligible for these funds.
- In-kind services are not eligible for reimbursement.
- Local matching funds must be secured within 12 months of the award being granted.
- 50% match may come from another funding source but must be secured within 12 months of the Dutchess County grant award.

- Municipal food waste drop-off site projects are encouraged to distribute the resulting compost to residents who participate in the drop-off project.
Funding Information
A total of $200,000 was appropriated in the 2024 Dutchess County Budget to support this program which will cover:
- Up to 50% of the purchase of an in-vessel aerobic composter and additional ancillary installation costs not to exceed $50,000 per award.
- Up to $20,000 for the initial start-up costs for a food waste drop-off site program.
This is a reimbursement grant program, meaning purchases must be made and paid before the County will reimburse for eligible expenses.

- Purchase of an in-vessel composting system.
- Ancillary installation costs for material and installation such as piping, electrical work, concrete slab, and roofing material.
- Outreach and education campaign costs.

- Purchase of start-up materials such as collection containers, shed, trailer, concrete slab, shovels, gloves, transport buckets for residents, etc.
- Outreach and education campaign costs.
Eligible Applicants
All local government entities with taxing authority and public K-12 schools within Dutchess County can apply for funding. Entities are encouraged to coordinate efforts and apply jointly, when possible.
