North Jersey Students Make A Difference: Fundraising For Orphans In India

Dated: October 30, 2024

Two seniors from Saddle River Day School, Devraj Dhupar and Sahil Polepalle, have embarked on a remarkable three-year journey to support orphans in India. Through their student chapter of the HELP Foundation, they have successfully raised nearly $49,000 to aid children in need.

Key Takeaways

  • Fundraising Initiatives: The students organized various events, including candy and bake sales, tutoring sessions, and walkathons.
  • Inspiration: Their efforts were inspired by their own family experiences and a desire to give back to their roots.
  • Impact: The funds raised have directly supported orphans, with a focus on education and basic needs.

The Journey Begins

Devraj and Sahil’s initiative began during the summer before their freshman year. Sahil, whose family has been involved with the HELP Foundation for years, approached Devraj to discuss the potential of starting a club at their school. They recognized the need for community service and the opportunity to make a significant impact.

Understanding The Need

India faces a severe education access crisis, with an estimated 31 million orphaned or abandoned children. Only a fraction of these children reside in orphanages, and many lack the resources necessary for education and basic care. The HELP Foundation, established in 1994, has been instrumental in supporting over 500 orphans across nine centers in India.

Fundraising Efforts

The students have employed various creative methods to raise funds:

  • Candy and Bake Sales: Engaging the school community with delicious treats.
  • Tutoring: Offering academic support while raising money.
  • Walkathons: Organizing physical activities that promote health and community involvement.

Connecting With The Orphans

In December 2022, Devraj and Sahil visited the Balgram orphanage near Pune, Maharashtra. This visit allowed them to connect with the children and understand their daily lives. They organized a Zoom call to introduce themselves, fostering a sense of connection and empathy.

Financial Commitment

Supporting an orphan in India is a significant financial commitment. It costs approximately $10,000 to provide one child with food, shelter, and education until the age of 18. So far, the Saddle River chapter has successfully supported four orphans, demonstrating the tangible impact of their fundraising efforts.

Future Plans

Devraj and Sahil are not stopping here. They plan to continue their fundraising efforts with:

  • Upcoming Bake Sale: Scheduled for November, aimed at engaging more students.
  • Walkathon: Another event planned for April 26, to further raise awareness and funds.
  • Leadership Transition: They are in the process of selecting new officers to ensure the continuation of their mission after graduation.

Community Involvement

The students aim to broaden their fundraising efforts by collaborating with local community groups, such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. This expansion will help increase awareness and support for their cause.

School Support

Saddle River Day Upper School Head Shai Zacaraev has expressed pride in the students’ commitment to this charitable cause. He emphasized the importance of supporting education for children across the globe, highlighting the ideal that more young people should strive for.

Through their dedication and hard work, Devraj and Sahil are not only raising funds but also inspiring their peers to engage in meaningful community service. Their journey exemplifies how young individuals can make a significant difference in the lives of others, transcending borders and cultures.
