Nonprofit Supports English Learners in Knoxville Amid Growing Demand

Dated: December 12, 2024

Hundreds of families in Knoxville are benefiting from free English language classes provided by the Center for English and Integration Services. As the demand for these services continues to rise, the nonprofit is calling for more volunteers to help support its mission of aiding immigrants and refugees in their journey to learn English.

Key Takeaways

  • The Center for English and Integration Services has been operational since 2009.
  • Approximately 550 adults and children have received English language support this year.
  • The nonprofit offers seven levels of English classes, welcoming all international students.
  • A significant portion of the students are refugees, with childcare and transportation services provided.
  • The organization is actively seeking volunteers to meet the increasing demand.

Growing Need for English Language Services

The Center for English and Integration Services has been a beacon of hope for immigrants and refugees in Knoxville since its inception in 2009. This year alone, the center has assisted around 550 individuals, helping them improve their English skills at no cost. The executive director, Sandra Fugate, emphasizes the importance of these services, stating that about 50% of their students are refugees.

The center offers a comprehensive program with seven levels of English classes, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, can find a suitable learning environment. In addition to language instruction, the center provides childcare and transportation, making it easier for families to participate in classes.

Community Celebration

To celebrate the progress of its students and the upcoming holiday season, the center hosted a festive gathering where students shared traditional foods from their cultures. This event not only highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the participants but also fostered a sense of community among students and volunteers.

Volunteer Opportunities

As the center anticipates an influx of approximately 100 new refugees in the coming months, the need for volunteers has never been more critical. Fugate encourages individuals with a passion for teaching and decent English skills to consider volunteering. The center has successfully trained volunteers from various professional backgrounds, including chemical engineers and attorneys, to become effective English instructors.

Personal Stories of Transformation

Many students have shared their positive experiences at the center. Rene Vergara, who moved to Knoxville from Ecuador, found the center after struggling to find suitable English classes elsewhere. He expressed gratitude for the welcoming environment and the quality of instruction he received.

Fatima Hasan, a student from Bangladesh, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting how the volunteers have supported her in various aspects of her life. She has been learning English at the center for nearly a year and appreciates the community’s assistance in overcoming challenges.

Invitation to Join the Mission

The Center for English and Integration Services invites anyone interested in learning or improving their English skills, as well as those who wish to volunteer, to visit the center. Fugate encourages potential volunteers to attend a class and engage with students, as this interaction greatly enriches the learning experience.

As the demand for English language services continues to grow, the center remains committed to its mission of empowering immigrants and refugees through education and community support. With the help of dedicated volunteers, the center aims to expand its reach and impact even more lives in Knoxville.
