Portland Nonprofit Reaches Milestone of One Million Meals Served

Dated: December 12, 2024

A Portland nonprofit, the Portland Food Project, has achieved a remarkable milestone by delivering the equivalent of one million meals to local food banks since its inception in 2012. This initiative, which began with just a handful of volunteers, has grown into a significant community effort aimed at combating food insecurity in the region.

Key Takeaways

  • The Portland Food Project started in 2012 with 14 volunteers.
  • It has now expanded to over 1,600 volunteers.
  • The organization collects food donations six times a year.
  • In 2024 alone, over 88,000 pounds of food have been collected.
  • One in ten people in the Portland area faces food insufficiency.

The Beginning of a Movement

The Portland Food Project was founded by Richard Nudelman in Southeast Portland, where he enlisted the help of 14 neighbors to collect extra canned food items. The goal was simple yet powerful: to help those in need within the community. Over the years, this grassroots initiative has blossomed into a robust network of volunteers dedicated to fighting hunger.

How It Works

Volunteers like Karen Beck play a crucial role in the project. They collect green bags filled with nonperishable food items from their neighbors six times a year. These bags are then transported to designated drop-off points, where the food is distributed to 16 local food banks. This model of neighbors helping neighbors has proven effective in addressing food insecurity in the area.

The Impact of Food Insecurity

Food insecurity is a pressing issue in Portland, with one in ten residents affected. Many individuals and families face difficult choices between purchasing food and paying for essential expenses like rent. The Portland Food Project aims to alleviate this burden by providing a steady supply of food to those in need.

Volunteer Experience

For many volunteers, participating in the Portland Food Project is a rewarding experience. Beck describes the collection events as uplifting, stating, "People are really energized. You see a lot of food coming in; you feel like you are making an impact." This sense of community and purpose drives the volunteers to continue their efforts.

A Growing Initiative

Since its inception, the Portland Food Project has collected over 88,000 pounds of food in 2024 alone, following a successful 2023 where over 100,000 pounds were gathered. The organization continues to grow, with more volunteers joining the cause and more food being collected to support local food banks.

Getting Involved

The Portland Food Project welcomes anyone interested in contributing to this vital cause. By simply grabbing an extra item during grocery shopping and placing it in the designated green bag, community members can make a significant difference in the lives of those facing food insecurity. The project exemplifies the power of community action and the impact of collective efforts in addressing hunger.

As the Portland Food Project celebrates this milestone of one million meals served, it stands as a testament to the strength of community and the importance of supporting one another in times of need.
