Local Nonprofit Delivers Quarter Million Pounds of Food to Community

Dated: December 13, 2024

In a remarkable display of community spirit, JK Community Farm, a nonprofit organization based in Purcellville, Virginia, has donated an impressive 247,000 pounds of organic produce and protein to local food banks this year. This initiative marks a significant milestone as the farm celebrates its fifth anniversary, having contributed over 1.2 million pounds of food to local assistance programs since its inception.

Key Takeaways

  • JK Community Farm donated 247,000 pounds of food in 2024.
  • The farm has provided over 1.2 million pounds of food since its establishment.
  • More than 6,700 volunteers contributed 20,000 hours of service this year.
  • The farm has expanded to nearly 70 varieties of produce and includes animal protein production.

Growth Over The Years

Since its first harvest, where it produced just 50,000 pounds of food, JK Community Farm has seen tremendous growth. The farm’s ability to scale its operations is a testament to the dedication of its volunteers and the support from the community. This year alone, over 6,700 volunteers dedicated their time, contributing a total of 20,000 hours to help with the farm’s operations.

Volunteer Engagement

The farm has become a hub for community engagement, hosting more than 75 companies for team-building events. This involvement not only helps the farm but also fosters a sense of community among participants, who contribute to a noble cause while building camaraderie.

Diverse Produce and Protein Production

JK Community Farm has expanded its offerings significantly, now growing nearly 70 varieties of produce. In addition to fruits and vegetables, the farm also produces animal protein, including cattle, elk, and venison. This diverse range of products ensures that local food banks receive a variety of nutritious options to distribute to those in need.

New Initiatives

In a bid to further enhance its contributions, the farm planted its first orchard this year, consisting of 100 fruit trees. This initiative not only diversifies the farm’s produce but also aims to provide fresh fruit to local food banks in the coming years.

Partnerships and Support

The farm collaborates with several nonprofit partners, including Loudoun Hunger Relief, Food for Others, Arlington Food Assistance Center, and DC Central Kitchen. These partnerships are crucial in ensuring that the food produced reaches those who need it most, amplifying the farm’s impact on the community.

Land and Legacy

JK Community Farm operates on land generously donated by Chuck Kuhn, the founder of JK Moving Services. Kuhn, who is the largest single landowner in Loudoun County, has placed much of his land into conservatorship, including the 150 acres that house the farm. This commitment to land conservation not only supports the farm’s mission but also preserves the natural landscape for future generations.

As JK Community Farm continues to grow and evolve, its commitment to alleviating food insecurity in the local community remains steadfast. The farm’s achievements over the past five years highlight the power of community involvement and the importance of sustainable practices in addressing hunger.
