Brooklyn Nonprofits Shine at 2025 Spark Prize Ceremony

Dated: January 10, 2025

On February 25, 2025, Brooklyn Org will honor five trailblazing nonprofits at the Spark Breakfast, celebrating their significant contributions to social justice and community empowerment. Each organization will receive a $100,000 grant to further their impactful work in the borough.

Key Takeaways

  • Five nonprofits awarded $100,000 each for their contributions to social justice.
  • The winners include Brooklyn Book Bodega, Brownsville Community Culinary Center, Community Help in Park Slope (CHiPS), Good Call, and Technology for Families in Need.
  • The Spark Prize emphasizes the importance of supporting community-led initiatives.

Celebrating Community Impact

Brooklyn Org, a prominent platform for philanthropy in Brooklyn, announced the winners of the 2025 Spark Prize, recognizing organizations that are making a difference in areas such as education, food security, health, legal services, and technology access. Dr. Jocelynne Rainey, president and CEO of Brooklyn Org, expressed pride in the winners, stating, "These organizations represent the very best of Brooklyn: deeply rooted in our communities and tirelessly working for equity."

The 2025 Spark Prize Winners

The following nonprofits were selected for their outstanding contributions:

  1. Brooklyn Book Bodega
Founded in 2019, this organization aims to increase access to books for children aged 0-18 in NYC. They host free events and literacy programs, partnering with local educators and community organizations to promote reading and learning.
  2. Brownsville Community Culinary Center
Established in 2015, this center provides free culinary training and nutritional education to residents. Their workshops empower youth with culinary skills while promoting access to healthy food options in the community.
  3. Community Help in Park Slope (CHiPS)
Operating since 1971, CHiPS offers hot meals and food pantry services to those in need, ensuring that no one is turned away. They also provide housing support for single mothers and their children through the Frances Residence.
  4. Good Call
Founded in 2016, Good Call leverages technology to assist low-income New Yorkers in navigating the criminal justice system. They have provided early legal intervention to over 10,000 individuals, significantly impacting their legal outcomes.
  5. Technology for Families in Need (TechFIN)
Co-founded in 2013, TechFIN addresses the digital divide by providing refurbished computers to low-income families. Their mission is to empower families with the technology necessary for education and job opportunities.

The Importance of the Spark Prize

The Spark Prize has invested over $4.8 million in 40 winners and 160 finalists since its inception, highlighting the need for flexible funding that allows nonprofits to adapt and grow. This year’s winners exemplify the spirit of innovation and commitment to justice that Brooklyn embodies.

Upcoming Event

The Spark Breakfast will take place on February 25 at the Barclays Center, where the winners will be celebrated for their achievements. Tickets are available for those who wish to support these vital community organizations and their ongoing efforts to create a more equitable Brooklyn.
