Community Rallies to Support Las Vegas Veteran Scammed Out of $180,000

Dated: February 3, 2025

In a heartwarming display of community support, several companies in Las Vegas have come together to assist 89-year-old Vietnam War veteran Manny Guerrero, who was recently scammed out of $180,000 in a Publishers Clearing House scheme. After losing his life savings, Guerrero received help from local businesses to repair his home and restore his sense of security.

Key Takeaways

  • Manny Guerrero, a Vietnam War veteran, was scammed out of $180,000.
  • Local businesses stepped in to help him with home repairs.
  • Guerrero’s story highlights the ongoing issue of scams targeting vulnerable individuals.

The Scam That Shook a Veteran

Manny Guerrero, who served in the Vietnam War, was targeted by scammers who convinced him he had won a large sum of money. They instructed him to pay taxes upfront to claim his winnings. In his eagerness to improve his living conditions, including replacing a faulty water heater, Guerrero complied, writing checks and making wire transfers.

"If they got on the aircraft and the aircraft went down, they would never make it home," Guerrero recalled, reflecting on his time in the war and the camaraderie he shared with younger service members.

Unfortunately, the promised winnings never materialized, leaving Guerrero in a precarious financial situation.

Community Response

After hearing Guerrero’s story through local news, several companies decided to take action. Vinny Raucci, the owner of Silver Star Plumbing, was one of the first to respond. He offered to replace Guerrero’s broken water heater, which had been leaking and causing damage to the home.

  • Silver Star Plumbing: Donated and installed a new water heater.
  • KD Williams Construction: Assisted in repairing the base of the water heater, ensuring it was secure and safe.

Both companies provided their services free of charge, demonstrating a commitment to helping a veteran in need. Guerrero expressed his gratitude, stating, "I offered to pay them half at least because I don’t have that kind of money. But he said no, no, no, it’s on us. They’re good people. They’re really good people."

Ongoing Challenges

Despite the support he received, Guerrero remains cautious. He recently received another scam call from individuals claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House. This time, he hung up immediately, having learned from his previous experience.

Officials from Publishers Clearing House have reiterated that they do not ask for upfront payments for taxes or fees. They emphasize that legitimate winners will be contacted in person by their Prize Patrol, not through phone calls.

Conclusion

Manny Guerrero’s story is a poignant reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by many seniors, particularly veterans who have served their country. The community’s response showcases the power of compassion and support in the face of adversity. As Guerrero continues to navigate the aftermath of the scam, he can take comfort in knowing that there are people and businesses willing to stand by him and help restore his faith in humanity.
