GrowBoston is making a total of $80,000 through grants of up to $9,999 to fund the development of conceptual designs for urban farms, community gardens, food forests, and other open spaces with food production elements. These grants are being made available from City of Boston Operating Funds. Designs must be for projects intended for public use and benefit, and may be for new spaces or for renovations or expansions of existing spaces. GrowBoston is the City of Boston’s new Office of Urban Agriculture, and part of the Mayor’s Office of Housing (MOH).

Organizations may apply for a maximum of $9,999.
Allowed Uses of Funding
- This grant is for the design of gardens, farms, food forests, and other open spaces with food production elements. Allowable uses include, but are not limited to:
- Fees or stipends for consultants for landscape design, budget development, project management, zoning reviews, etc.
- Costs associated with community engagement events directly related to project design
- Soil testing to develop environmental remediation plans
- Up to 10% of the grant budget can be for indirect/administrative costs or a fiscal sponsorship fee.
- The following expenses are not allowed using City of Boston operating budget grant funds: gift cards, rent, utilities, alcoholic beverages, fundraising or lobbying activities, and/or salaries of staff not involved with directly delivering the program.
Eligibility Criteria
Recipients must be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit or a community-based organization partnering with a fiscal sponsor that is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. No grants will be awarded to individuals or for-profit businesses.
Selection Criteria
Grantees will be selected based on eligibility of proposed costs and availability of funds.
