The program is designed to help businesses grow and expand, make repairs and leasehold improvements, and/or purchase inventory and equipment. The collaborative effort between GM and the Economic Alliance will help to broaden revitalization efforts beyond the city’s downtown and into the neighborhoods.
This grant program, established with funding support from GM, seeks to expand revitalization efforts across the city’s neighborhoods by supporting local businesses and boosting the power of the community doing vital work there to support Flint residents.
Funding Information
- The Moving Flint Forward grant program will award 16 grants up to $10,000 each to small businesses that effectively demonstrate needs or opportunities that support business growth, with 75 percent earmarked for minority-owned businesses
- The Moving Flint Forward program invites past grantees to apply to receive up to $5,000 each and will award 10 alumni a grant.
Grant Period
The grant period for Moving Flint Forward Small Business Grant program will run from May 14, 2025 to November 1, 2025.
Uses of Fund
Allowable uses of grants funds include repairs and leasehold improvements, and/or the purchase of inventory and equipment. Funds may not be used for payroll, rent, staffing or mortgage payments. Additionally, debt service on any federal, state or local taxes owed are not eligible expenses for program consideration.
Eligibility Criteria
- Must own and operate a business within the City of Flint
- All applicants must complete each step of the application process to receive the entire grant
- Businesses must host at least one site visit with staff dedicated to this program to showcase progress/completion of grant activities
- Business must have a current business plan available to be submitted alongside grant application. No handwritten business plans will be accepted.
- Business must show that they are able to manage a reimbursable grant with a Business Finance Statement
- Business must be a small business with less than 20 employees
- Business may not be a franchise
- Business owner cannot be an employee of the Flint & Genesee Group, nor its divisions or other subsidiaries, along with other immediate family members (spouse, parent, children, etc.)
- Business must be in good standing as of the date of submission and not in bankruptcy
- Owners must not be listed on the Michigan State Police Sex Offender Registry; and must comply with the U.S. Patriot Act 3-4
- Business must have been in business at least one year
- Business must not be a non-profit
- Business must have generated revenue within the last year
- Businesses must not utilize grant funding from other programs or organizations to fulfill the reimbursement obligations.
