Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 09/29/2023

Grant Size: $500,000

Grant Duration: 5 years

Details:

This group is heterogenous in terms of cancer type, treatments received, prognosis, and outcomes. Specifically, this RFA is intended to solicit applications proposing 1) observational studies to understand the trajectory of physical and psychological symptoms, patterns of care, and unmet needs; and/or 2) the development and testing of interventions to improve the delivery of comprehensive survivorship care in this group of cancer survivors.

Examples of relevant research topics include but are not limited to:

  • Examination of factors associated with physical and psychological symptoms (including symptom trajectories), adverse effects, and other survivorship outcomes (e.g., quality of life and functional outcomes) among individuals living with likely incurable cancer
  • Determining components of survivorship care (which may include integration of oncology sub-specialties, other specialty care, palliative care, supportive care such as physical and occupational therapy, nutrition/diet, mental health, financial services, and primary care) to optimize outcomes among individuals living with likely incurable cancer
  • Understanding the impact of living longer with likely incurable cancer on employment and financial concerns, given changing care trajectories and delivery of innovative, often more-costly, treatments
  • Development and testing of models of survivorship care for individuals living with likely incurable cancer that can be tailored based on the needs of the survivor and health system resources and include attention to management of changing symptom trajectories, psychosocial support, care coordination, management of comorbid conditions, and/or support for the survivor/caregiver dyad
  • Development of interventions to address shared decision-making in the context of prognostic awareness among individuals living with likely incurable cancer (e.g., to improve prognostic understanding in patients and caregivers, address how providers communicate prognostic information, and identify factors that influence prognostic understanding and communication)
