Northampton Youth Unite for Charity and Meet Royal Representative

Dated: May 6, 2025

In a heartwarming display of community spirit, youth from the Northampton England Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently met with James Saunders Watson, the lord lieutenant of Northamptonshire and representative of King Charles III. The event celebrated their charitable efforts, including the collection of thousands of stamps for Oxfam, which will help provide clean water in Africa.

Key Takeaways

  • Youth collected thousands of stamps for charity, enabling the construction of a well in Africa.
  • The event featured engaging activities, including sorting stamps and playing dodgeball.
  • The lord lieutenant praised the youth for their dedication to service and community involvement.

A Royal Visit

The visit from the lord lieutenant took place in March, where he expressed his delight in spending time with the youth groups from Kettering and Northampton. Watson emphasized the importance of community service and cooperation, reflecting the values promoted by the Crown.

"It was a delight to spend a very wonderful evening with youth groups from Kettering and Northampton at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Everyone was so engaged with all the activities from sorting stamps for Oxfam and the very active game of dodgeball," Watson stated.

Community Service Initiatives

The stamp collection initiative was not an isolated effort. The youth have been actively involved in various charitable projects, demonstrating their commitment to serving the community. Some notable activities include:

  1. Christmas Card Campaign: In December 2024, the youth wrote Christmas cards for residents in four local care homes as part of the Postcards of Kindness initiative.
  2. Baby Basics Support: In October 2024, young women assembled baskets filled with essential items for new mothers, including diapers, toiletries, and clothing.
  3. Environmental Service: During a camp in August 2024, the youth helped clean and maintain the grounds of Northleigh House School, which supports young people with anxiety.
  4. Creme Egg Collection: In April 2024, the youth collected over 1,000 creme eggs for the North Ukrainian Association, exceeding their goal of 500.
  5. Tool Refurbishment: They also refurbished tools for the charity Tools With a Mission, which sends usable tools to developing countries.

Strengthening Community Bonds

The activities not only fostered a spirit of service but also strengthened the bonds among the youth. Bishop Keith Reynolds of the Kettering Ward expressed his joy at the lord lieutenant’s visit, highlighting the importance of faith and community service in the lives of the youth.

"We were delighted that the lord lieutenant and his wife were able to attend this evening and meet our wonderful youth who meet together to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and live by His teachings to help others around them," Reynolds remarked.

Conclusion

The gathering of youth in Northampton serves as a reminder of the positive impact that young people can have on their communities. Their dedication to service, coupled with the recognition from a royal representative, underscores the importance of charitable work and community engagement. As they continue to collect stamps and participate in various service projects, these young individuals are not only making a difference locally but also contributing to global causes.
