Details:

The objective of this program is to provide support to trusted organizations that can help improve the lives of their communities through programmatic, capacity-building, and policy-based work with community focus as the change agent. This work should correspond to documented community needs and can include a range of issue areas, where organizing intersects with a built environment.

Priority will be given to applicant organizations that utilize community and tenant organizing as a way to improve the lives of their communities and social policy.

Funding Information

As noted, AF-NY will provide time-limited, multi-year support to grant recipients. The term of funding is for two consecutive years with an exit grant in year three. Annual grants will range from $25,000 to $100,000 with the third-year exit grant being a stepped down amount.

Eligible Counties: Rockland and Westchester Counties; Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk Counties) and the five boroughs of New York City (Bronx, Kings, New York, Queens and Richmond Counties).

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a Fund grant, a CBO in the five boroughs of New York City, in Rockland, Westchester and Nassau and Suffolk Counties must meet the eligibility criteria listed below:

  • Be an IRS designated 501c 3 organization.
  • Be community-based in its location, origins, and method of operation.
  • Incorporate into its approach a full range of CBO tools, focusing on community and tenant organizing, capacity-building, and policy-development work to advance the community agenda.
  • Focus on working with high need populations that have been underserved, poorly served, or overlooked, whether long-term residents or those who are new to the community. Examples might include but are not limited to: low-income; immigrants; incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals; pansexual, transgender and/or gender non-conforming individuals; unhoused individuals or families; and individuals with disabilities.
  • Focus on improving the physical, economic, and/or social opportunities of community members.
  • Focus their work or mission around community-led advocacy or grassroots actions to change policies
  • Actively include a representative group of residents, board members, and other area constituents in the goal setting and management of the organization.
