Details:

MD Two Fifty Inclusive History Grants will fund the exploration of under-represented narratives related to Marylanders’ struggle for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness before, during, and after the American Revolution. The goal of this grant program is to support inclusive, community-centered research, events, programs, projects, or exhibitions offered by museums, heritage areas, history organizations and sites, other nonprofits, and state, county, municipal, and tribal entities.

Funding Information

Applicants may request up to $4,000 for a project.

Grant Period

Complete project within one-year of award date.

Eligible Activities 

  • Grants may be utilized in support of research, programming, and interpretive projects that seek to deepen public understanding of the complex history
  • Projects that honor the legacy of both free and enslaved African Americans in the making of Maryland and the nation, and that recognize the persistence and contributions of Maryland’s Indigenous people and communities are encouraged
  • Representative projects include but are not limited to the following:
    • Research, including archival research, oral histories, research related to a building, structure, or space that broadens interpretation of the site
    • Development and installation of historic markers and/or interpretive signage
    • Production of conferences, symposia, programs, and events related to Maryland history
    • Creation of public exhibitions
    • Creation of publications and/or educational materials.

Eligibility Criteria 

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and state, county, municipal, and tribal entities. Nonprofit organizations must be a 501c3, and be in good standing with the State of Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT), be qualified to do business in Maryland, and have the legal capacity and authority to incur obligations involved under the grant program.

Funded projects should:

  • Share, amplify, and explore inclusive stories about America’s past that invite participation from all Marylanders
  • Encourage reflection on the ongoing evolution of American democracy, Maryland’s integral role in that process, and the impact of Marylanders on the nation’s past, present, and future
  • Demonstrate how understanding the complexity of the history helps us to respond to the present and prepare for the future.
