The Durango Creates! Grant program encourages creative projects that the public can enjoy, based on the idea of creative placemaking. This approach uses the community’s assets and inspiration to create public spaces that promote health, happiness, and well-being. The grant aims to boost interest and engagement across Durango.
The program focuses on investing in small-scale, community-driven projects that promote placemaking and community engagement. It seeks to strengthen the connection between arts, culture, and local businesses, while supporting creative professionals and encouraging collaboration across industries. The grant also aims to provide free and accessible cultural experiences for the public.
Durango Creates! offers up to $5,000 in reimbursement funding to cover materials, artist fees, supplies, and more. Funds are released after the approved project is completed and all required documentation is submitted.
Eligible projects include public art such as murals, sculptures, and temporary installations. Other ideas include parklets, plazas, public seating, free public events, beautification efforts, and First Friday performances or artist fees if they are free and open to the public. Performance art and experiences within Durango city limits are also supported.
Individuals, neighborhood groups, businesses, and nonprofits that benefit the Durango community are eligible to apply.
Applications are evaluated based on the quality and creativity of the project, including whether it is a new or ongoing event. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) components are important, looking at whether the project is created by, for, and accessible to diverse cultures, age groups, and communities. Community engagement and collaboration with partners are also key factors.
The impact during off-season months, project duration (one-time, permanent, or temporary), and plans for maintenance are considered. Environmental sustainability is emphasized, with projects expected to respect community efforts for sustainable practices. Lastly, the quality of the proposal itself, including completeness and required documents, is reviewed carefully.
