IRE Freelance Fellowship 2025

Dated: July 15, 2025

The Investigative Reporters and Editors’ (IRE) Freelance Fellowship offers cash awards to support independent journalists working on investigative projects. These fellowships are designed to help freelancers develop impactful and significant stories that serve the public interest.

Eligible proposals include a range of nonfiction formats such as books, documentaries, cable series, video or audio reports, and articles for newspapers, magazines, and online platforms. Projects must be aimed at U.S. audiences and primarily published or broadcast in American outlets.

Fellowship awards vary by project length. Long-term projects can receive up to $4,000, along with a one-year IRE membership and two hours of consultancy from Freelance Investigative Reporters and Editors (FIRE). Short-term projects may receive up to $2,000, plus the same membership and consulting benefits.

Priority is given to proposals dealing with whistleblowers, business ethics, or privacy issues. The program supports work that demonstrates depth, public significance, and potential for real-world impact.

Applicants must be freelance journalists who earn most of their income through freelance work and need financial support to pursue investigative stories. The deadline to apply is September 29, 2025.

For more information, visit IRE.
