The Neighborhood Matching Grant Program, run by the City of Houston Department of Neighborhoods, supports beautification and improvement efforts across Houston by offering dollar-for-dollar matching grants. These grants aim to encourage volunteerism and help neighborhood organizations gain experience in planning and community development.
Grant amounts range from $1,000 to $10,000, with reimbursable matching funds available between $500 and $5,000. The program supports physical improvement projects that benefit the community and remain accessible to the public. Projects must have lasting impact and include active involvement from neighborhood residents.
To apply, organizations must provide a letter of permission from the property owner or relevant government agency, proof of property ownership, a photo of the proposed site, and three letters of support. If the project requires permits or approval from a City of Houston department, those must be secured in advance. Without pre-approval, the application is considered ineligible.
Examples of eligible projects include street sign toppers, entryway signage, murals, walkways with pavers, park benches, and esplanade landscaping or irrigation. All proposed sites must be clearly documented and approved prior to submission.
Only neighborhood-based organizations or civic clubs incorporated as 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofits through the State of Texas are eligible. Organizations that are not registered nonprofits must partner with one that is. Applicants must represent a defined area within Houston city limits and show how they will support and maintain the project over time. Political groups and individuals are not eligible to apply.
The application deadline is August 31, 2025.
