Details:

The Mary Black Foundation prioritizes investments that support high-quality early life experiences because research shows that they can significantly impact lifelong health outcomes. They also know it is one of the best ways to improve community-wide health outcomes. The Foundation uses a holistic, multi-generation approach, intentionally investing in both children and the adults who care for them.

The Mary Black Foundation believes that investing in young people and the adults who care for them – a multi-generation approach – is one of the best ways to improve outcomes for children and positively impact the health and well-being of the entire community. This population-focused strategy allows for a comprehensive, holistic approach that recognizes a range of conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, and age can put individuals at greater risk of negative health outcomes. They acknowledge and seek to address health disparities within foundation community.

Strategies

Based on input from partners, research, and health data, the Foundation is currently focusing on the following strategies:

  • Improve women’s access to prenatal and postpartum care and ensure access to contraception for effective pregnancy planning.
    • Increase young children’s access to health care, developmental screenings, and early interventions.
    • Improve access to high-quality, affordable childcare and early learning environments.
    • Support initiatives that advance mental health and resilience for young children and their parents.
    • Increase access to financial resources and affordable housing for families with young children.
  • Within these strategies, they prioritize initiatives that:
    • Focus on the earliest years of life, beginning with prenatal.
    • Tackle the root causes of issues and
    • create long-lasting change.
    • Take a holistic and
    • multi-generation approach.
