Funding for Wildlife Rehabilitation in Oregon and Washington

Dated: June 17, 2022

The Wildlife Rehabilitation grant program offers urgent care of injured and orphaned wildlife native to Oregon and Washington.

Donor Name: The Kinsman Foundation

State: Oregon and Washington

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 08/01/2022

Size of the Grant: $5,000

Details:

Native wildlife rehabilitation is the focus of this interest, and is almost exclusively limited to nonprofits managed by state- and federally-licensed wildlife rehabilitators. The Foundation does not intend these grants to include policy, research, preservation or protection of wildlife habitat.

A small portion of native wildlife budget is reserved for wildlife appreciation projects or programs that offer the general public opportunities to observe and appreciate the natural world. These activities will:

  • promote individuals’ stewardship of native wildlife and its natural habitat
  • enable people to understand and minimize their impact on the Earth
  • promote responsible enjoyment of wildlife in recreational settings.

Funding Information

Applications for Wildlife Rehabilitation grants larger than $5,000 available. These grants are scheduled for distribution in November. Inquiries for grants of less than $5,000 are processed throughout the year.

Eligibility Criteria

These grant policies are an informal summary of granting practices and procedures. They vary in importance, depending on the individual circumstances of each situation. Each, however, reflects the last few years of grantmaking:

  • Grants are made only for activities benefiting Oregon and southern Washington.
  • Grants are awarded only to tax-exempt nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and government agencies. Only exceptional situations will result in a grant that requires us to exercise the expenditure responsibility procedures required by the IRS for some grants.
  • Granting decisions are made by a consensus of our Board of Directors without significant staff recommendation.
  • There is some internal inconsistency over the question of operating support versus project support. Like many funders, we appreciate the unique results nonprofits can sometimes achieve through a special project or program. Yet they understand that often the most valuable support we can provide to organizations whose values, goals and work they admire is general or administrative support. Generally speaking, project support still is afforded a preference.
  • First-time applicants to the Small Grants Program are rarely awarded more than $5,000.
  • Grants outside indicated areas of interest are initiated by the Foundation.
  • No matching funds are required.
  • There are no reapplication limits for either previous grantees or others.
  • An educational component to a program will not enhance its likelihood of funding.
