The purpose of this program is to provide micro grants to eligible Maui County resident farmers and ranchers with sustained economic losses resulting from the loss of pasture forage for cattle, death of cattle, destruction of farms, reduced crop yields, and other agriculture property damages arising directly from the excessive axis deer population since July 1, 2021.
Eligible Activities
Permissible uses include costs expended in protective/mitigating measures, relating to seeds, replanting efforts, livestock replacement, fencing, fuel, labor, and rental equipment as necessary to restore the producers’ agricultural operations to functioning status. The maximum allowable award is up to $30,000.
Eligibility Criteria
Requirements are that an applicant:
- Shall be a citizen of the United States of America or a legally registered alien and a resident within the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai (grant area).
- Must describe their losses, that are directly attributable to the axis deer overpopulation, how the financial assistance will be used, and what measurable outcomes and benefits in agricultural production are expected resulting from the financial assistance by June 30, 2023.
- Must be operating on more than 12 acres but less than 40 acres within the grant area and possess a State General Excise Tax License for the farming business as of July 1, 2021.
- Must have been in business long enough to file at least one Federal and one State tax return.
- Applicants shall not be disqualified based upon receipt of COVID-related grant funding from supplementary sources.
