The goal is to provide these scholars tailored mentoring so that they may advance and succeed in NIDDK-relevant, independent research careers. Mentoring has long served an essential role in developing a scientific workforce, and research shows that it is critical to supporting the careers of early career faculty from underrepresented backgrounds. Support would be provided to mentors who will develop educational activities and evidence-informed mentoring to a diverse cohort of scholars.
Goals
To accomplish the stated overarching goal, this FOA will support the following:
- Courses for Skills Development: For example, courses focused on skills related to the career advancement of the current NIDDK-funded scholars. The short courses are expected to enhance the skills and competencies related to the career development needs of the scholars. The proposed courses may address, but are not limited to:
- Developing administrative, managerial and/or mentorship skills (e.g., to guide students and technical personnel);
- Identifying appropriate research funding opportunities and applying for funding (grantsmanship skills);
- Enhancing leadership, project management, and collaborative skills needed for the productive conduct of research programs;
- Managing career challenges and expectations and academic advancement;
- Balancing teaching, research, service, and work-life balance.
- Mentoring Activities: For example, activities focused on tailored, culturally responsive one-on-one mentoring, as well as peer mentoring for the NIDDK-funded scholars. The proposed mentoring activities may include, but are not limited to:
- Developing individual development plans, mentoring compacts, mentoring maps, and mentoring plans;
- Convening regular meetings with the appropriate leaders at the institutions where the current NIDDK-funded scholars conduct research to exchange ideas and improve mentoring relationships;
- Facilitating and encourage peer mentoring.
Funding Information
- Although the size of an award may vary with the scope of the research education program, the total direct costs per award are limited to $150,000 annually.
- The total project period for each award in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed 5 years.
