Request for Proposal for Mini Grant DCBOH COVID-19/FLU – Community Outreach (Georgia)

Dated: August 3, 2022

The Dekalb County Board of Health (DCBOH) is seeking proposals for a limited number of community outreach projects to increase DeKalb County’s COVID-19 vaccination awareness and vaccination rate.

Donor Name: Dekalb County Board of Health (DCBOH)

State: Georgia

County: DeKalb County (GA)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 08/15/2022

Size of the Grant: $5,000

Details:

The Board of Health received a Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for September 2018 through September 2023. The Board of Health and its partners work collaboratively to implement tailored, community-based, participatory initiatives to address poor nutrition, the lack of physical activity and to improve community-clinical linkages among disadvantaged populations. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, REACH grantees receive supplemental funding for COVID-19 education. This funding is relevant to REACH grantees since they are addressing health disparities at the community level.

As a result, mini grants are used for community-level education and outreach to:

  • Increase public awareness of the importance of COVID-19 vaccination and ways to prevent COVID-19 infections.
  • Facilitate community discussions to address barriers and concerns about COVID-19 vaccination.

Mini grant funding outreach activities can be used for the following:

  • Webinars
  • Podcasts
  • Training
  • Workshops
  • Community events
  • Printing/copies
  • Grassroots efforts such as door-to-door community education
  • Purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face shields, masks, and gloves
  • Purchase of advertising space in the newspaper, radio, social media platforms, etc.
  • Stipends
  • Mileage

Mini grant funding cannot be used for:

  • Purchase of vaccine
  • Dues
  • Operating deficits
  • Publication of books
  • Capital improvements/building projects
  • Chairs or professorships
  • Endowments, annual fund drives, direct mail solicitation or fundraising events
  • Purchase of food
  • Projects intended to influence legislation or support candidates for political office
  • Subawards to other organizations.

Priority Population

The priority population is DeKalb County’s African American residents, especially those who are 45 to 64 years of age. This population carries a high disease burden that puts them at risk for complications from and COVID-19. For example, the 2019 DeKalb County health assessment (unpublished) reveals that African American residents have:

  • The highest morbidity rates of all types of cardiovascular disease compared to other racial groups.
  • A higher prevalence of diabetes than white residents, and that African Americans ages 45 to 64 have a higher diabetes prevalence than those ages 18 to 44.
  • A higher prevalence of obesity compared to whites, and that African Americans ages 45 to 64 have a higher obesity prevalence than those ages 18 to 44.
