Grants to address Social Issues in Arizona

Dated: September 7, 2022

The United Way of Graham & Greenlee Counties is seeking applications for its Quarter programming to encourage innovative solutions to social challenges.

Donor Name: United Way of Graham & Greenlee Counties

State: Arizona

County: Graham County (AZ) and Greenlee County (AZ)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 10/01/2022

Details:

Types of Grant

These applications should focus on one of four types of grants:

  • Collaborative Partnerships Grants: CPGs should be designed to address social issues not readily addressed by one organization or in one sector. Collaborative Partnerships include:  engagement of more than one implementing partner; a common strategic vision among partners; shared impact approaches among partners; reinforcing activities among partners; and a clear description of partner roles, budgets, responsibilities and expectations.  CPGs could have a planned “Life of Project” of 3 to 5 years.  Funding will occur annually, based on performance and availability of funds.
  • Innovation and Proof of Concept Grants: These grants should be designed to encourage innovation, test development hypotheses, and encourage novel approaches to social and economic problem solving. These grants are an opportunity for organizations to try something new they may have been wanting to explore.
  • Less Restrictive Grants: This category could allow an organization flexibility in how they use the funds over the grant period (subject to UWGGC’s funding guidelines and standing rules). In their proposals, applicants should specify “organization” outcomes rather than “project” outcomes.  Organizations with a history of strong leadership, strategy, governance and impact per dollar may be better served with this flexibility, allowing them to think long term, develop organizational strength, and simplify impact reporting (i.e. by organization rather than project).  Consult with UWGGC staff to determine whether your organization would be eligible for a “less restrictive” grant.
  • Feasibility/Planning Grants: These grants, expected to be less than one year in duration, are designed to strengthen community organizations by supporting technical feasibility studies, organizational development/training, and strategic planning.

Though being introduced in the fourth quarter, these types of grant structures could also be considered during regular quarterly programming cycles, respective to each specific quarterly focus area (Quarter 1-Economic Development, Quarter 2-Education, Quarter 3-Health).  Importantly, applicants are always welcome and encouraged to meet and talk with UWGGC to ensure a mutual understanding of these additional design opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria

The United Way of Graham & Greenlee Counties will consider funding for:

  • 501(c)(3) non-profit tax-exempt organizations with eligible health and human service programs that are in good standing with the United Way Good standing requires successful completion of approved grant activities, submission of grant impact reports, engagement with True Impact for reporting on outcomes, valid marketing of the United Way, and any financial audit confirmation.
  • Other tax-exempt organizations such as public and charter schools, municipal agencies, fiscal agents and other 501c nonprofit organizations
  • All eligible grants, except infrastructure grants, with at least a 31% match of total project budget either in cash or in kind
  • Infrastructure grants up to $200,000 with at least a 50% match of total project budget either in cash or in kind
  • Sponsorship of Education and Health activities up to $2500
  • Salaries that are paid to provide direct services to an agency’s target population

The United Way of Graham County does not provide funding for the following:

  • Granting Foundations or pass-through funding for any purpose other than fiscal agency for distinctive projects or programs
  • Public Works Projects (example: roads, sewers, utilities)
  • Salaries to fund a specific staff position – Exception: If an organization can demonstrate
    • the position would have a significant impact; and
    • be sustainable. To demonstrate sustainability, the organization must present a specific plan to sustain the position long term. The position description will be reviewed by the Community Grant Advisory Committee and recommendations will be submitted to the UWGGC board.  Exceptions will be approved on a case-by-case basis.  The UWGGC Board of Directors will ultimately make the final decision.
  • Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status
  • Individuals, including support for specific students, researchers, travel funds, conference fees, medical procedures, etc.
  • Grant administration fees
  • Chromebooks
  • Religious activities, churches, or church sponsored programs limited to church membership
  • Political or lobbying organizations, or those supporting the candidacy of a particular individual
  • Individual athletic teams (unless 501(c)(3) or tax exempt)
  • Concerts or other entertainment events unless 501(c)(3) (example: Gila Valley Arts Program)
  • Organizations or entities that may have known or reasonably perceived conflicts with the policies, procedures, programs and practices of United Way
  • Organizations which may pose a threat to the State of Arizona or the United States of America.
