The Big Cover Up Student Initiative Grant (West Virginia and Ohio)

Dated: October 3, 2022

The United Way of the River Cities is now accepting grant proposals from area high schools for The Big Cover Up student initiative grant!

Donor Name: United Way of the River Cities

State: Ohio and West Virginia

County: Cabell County (WV), Wayne County (WV), Lincoln County (WV), Mason County (WV) and Lawrence County (OH)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 10/07/2022

Details:

The Big Cover Up is a partnership between United Way of the River Cities (UWRC), Advantage Toyota Dealer Match Program, donors Randy and Ashley Saunders, and schools in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason and Wayne (WV) counties and Lawrence (OH) county schools. The program has 2 main goals: to provide essential items to kids in community and to teach students about community service.

Funded projects provide essential items for other students/children in the winter and historically have centered around ensuring that younger students have access to warm winter coats and clothing. All projects must be student-initiated and have a faculty sponsor.

Items may include:

  • Warm Winter Clothing – coats, hats, gloves, scarves, boots or other items of clothing
  • Items to stock school pantries (non-perishable foods, toiletries and hygiene supplies)
  • Holiday gifts

Students select who they will purchase items for; some purchase for elementary school kids while others want to provide for their peers at their own school. Faculty are asked to assist in identifying students in need and arranging distribution of items.

Eligibility Criteria

Schools in Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, and Mason counties in West Virginia, and in Lawrence County, Ohio, are eligible to apply.

Requirements

  • Must be a school or community-based project.
  • Students must secure matching funds through sponsors, donations or fundraising activities.
  • Must be student-led and student-driven.
  • Must include a school faculty sponsor.
  • Must be cost effective.
  • Project Evaluation must be submitted upon completion of the project and include ALL receipts for money spent.
  • Unused United Way funds MUST be returned with evaluation.
  • Final evaluation should include copies of posters, letters, press releases, etc. used to promote the project. Impact statements from participating students are also encouraged.
  • Project must be completed no later than January 20, 2023 with final report due no later than February 3, 2023.
