Michigan School Breakfast Program (SBP) Expansion Grant

Dated: October 28, 2022

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced two rounds of mini grants to directly benefit the School Breakfast Program
(SBP).

Donor: United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)

State: Michigan

County: All Counties

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 11/17/2022

Size of the Grant: $10,000

Grant Duration: 1 year

Details:

Eligible School Food Authorities (SFAs) will be able to increase school breakfast participation by expanding and/or promoting the school breakfast program; or increase nutritional content and/or quality of food served in the school breakfast program.

The SBP Expansion Grant Objectives:

  • Provide subgrants to Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) for qualifying schools to establish, maintain, or expand the SBP.
  • Increase breakfast participation in qualifying schools.
  • Increase nutritional content and/or quality of food served.

Funding Information

A grant application for an additional $10,000 in grant funds will be available for FY 2024 (July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024).

Criteria

To qualify as a potential sub-recipient, a school must be considered “severe need.” For a school to be severe need, 40% or more of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) lunches served at the school were served to free and reduced-price eligible students. The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is using severe need and eligibility data from SY 2019-2020 (FY 2020).

As part of the sub-recipient grant application, LEAs/schools will identify activities that meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Establish, promote, or expand their SBP
  • Extend the period during which school breakfast is available during the day
  • Provide school breakfast to students at the qualifying school during the school day
  • Increase the nutritional content and/or quality of food served

Funds may only be used to expand, maintain, and/or begin a School Breakfast Program at buildings designated as severe need. The funds may be used at one or multiple buildings based on specific need.

Funds may be requested for:

  • Purchasing equipment (kiosks, thermal bags, tablets/handhelds for mobile POS counts, additional garbage cans, breakfast carts, etc.)
  • Staff training (hiring a local Chef to teach skills)
  • Short-term labor costs to support staffing for initial implementation and kick off
  • Kick-off/grand opening event including promotional materials to announce to parents/students
  • Taste-testing new breakfast items
  • Adult meals when a teacher/administrator/support staff join students for breakfast
  • Model the importance of breakfast to start the day
