United Way of Rhode Island’s Community Impact Fund

United Way of Rhode Island is accepting applications for the 2023-2026 Community Impact Fund grant program, which will align investments with their LIVE UNITED 2025 strategic plan.

Details:

A total of $3 million in annual funding is being made available to nonprofits across the Ocean State. The grants will be awarded from United Way of Rhode Island’s Community Impact Fund to nonprofit organizations whose work advances their mission of building racial equity and opportunities for all Rhode Islanders.

For the 2023-2026 Community Impact Fund grant opportunity, United Way of Rhode Island is committing $3 million per year to provide operational support grants to Rhode Island nonprofits that are addressing racial equity through work in the following focus areas and strategies:

  • Achieve United
    • Increasing access to experiential learning for kindergarten through 3rd grade youth to increase appreciation for abstract and foreign concepts.
    • Increasing access to out of school time programs, with a focus on promoting the social and emotional support and development of middle school BIPOC youth.
    • Increasing access to and enrollment in out of school time programs which mitigate the school to prison pipeline for BIPOC youth.
  • Advocate United
    • Supporting community-based advocacy for social justice and the advancement of racial equity.
    • Supporting municipal (city/town) level policy and advocacy work to support the development of policies and budgets which advance equity.
    • Supporting the creation of policies that yield improved outcomes for BIPOC and other marginalized communities.
    • Supporting original research that promotes racial equity and access to publicly available opportunities for personal and business needs.
    • Establishing baseline data for outcomes pertinent to United Way of Rhode Island’s goals, highlighting the disparities for BIPOC and other marginalized communities.
  • Lift United
    • Supporting community-based initiatives which support tenant rights and advocacy.
    • Supporting innovative funding and strategies to increase access to safe and affordable housing, especially those that reduce systemic barriers for BIPOC communities.
    • Supporting the removal of systemic barriers to employment for Rhode Islanders, especially from BIPOC communities.
    • Supporting workforce development and adult education opportunities for un/underemployed and BIPOC Rhode Islanders.
    • Supporting digital equity and strengthening the distance learning infrastructure for adult learners.

Project Period

The funding period for this funding opportunity is July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

United Way of Rhode Island primarily make grants to 501(c)(3) public charities. They also make grants to support organizations or projects that work with qualifying fiscal sponsors. They do not make grants to individuals or for scholarships. It is also rare for United Way of Rhode Island to fund capital projects or event sponsorships.

This Request for Proposals will be rooted in racial justice and will prioritize organizations that:

  • Support and serve communities of color o Are led-by BIPOC-identifying staff and board including:
    • Diverse staff and leadership who are demographically reflective of the community being engaged by the organization. Examples include: BIPOC-identifying Executive Director, Paid or Un-paid Executive Leadership, Program Directors and or Lead Operational Roles.
    • Organizations with boards at least 50% BIPOC representation.
  • Are engaged in intentional work to advance Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) within their organization and in their work
