Deadline: 01/22/2023

Size of the Grant: 1200 euro

Details:

The Åland Islands Peace Institute was founded in 1992. It is an independent foundation situated in Mariehamn (Åland). At the Institute they work both practically and with research on peace and conflict issues in a broadly defined manner and from the vantage point of the special status that Åland enjoys under international law. Issues of autonomy, minorities and regional security are among the core areas of work at the Åland Islands Peace Institute.

The Peace Fellowship entails a research stay on the Åland Islands. The stay is scheduled in cooperation with the Åland Islands Peace Institute for autumn 2023. The fellowship is expected to last up to two months, as agreed.

Benefits

A Peace Fellowship comprises the following benefits:

  • A return ticket (economy) from your place of residence to Mariehamn
  • A monthly stipend of 1200 euro
  • Accommodation in Mariehamn in a single room apartment or guesthouse, alternatively assistance in finding appropriate accommodation
  • Working space and access to their small but specialized library
  • The possibility to present your work at a public seminar

Eligibility Criteria

  • The Institute invites researchers in the fields of peace research, international law, political science or other relevant disciplines to apply for the Åland Peace Fellowship 2023. For 2023 they will give priority to applications relevant to matters of sustainability issues in territorial autonomies, including autonomous islands.
  • A good command of either English or Swedish/Scandinavian is a prerequisite for being able to fully benefit from the fellowship.
  • An Åland Peace Fellow is expected to work on a theme relevant to the Institute’s areas of work. Furthermore, a key selection criterion is overlapping research interests and the potential for a mutually beneficial research visit. The ability to combine research and practical societal engagement for peace is considered an asset.
  • They welcome applications from all parts of the world, in particular from regions with experiences of issues of territorial autonomy, sustainability and management of natural resources. Applicants from a minority or indigenous background and islands are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must have concluded studies at master level, as a minimum, and be involved in research work.
  • Applications are assessed by the Research Council of the Åland Islands Peace Institute on the basis of the criteria mentioned. The selection process is expected to take ca two months.
