Mission

Arts Council of the Valley cultivates the arts and connects communities in the City of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

ACV’s advancing the Arts grants support artists, art educators, and organizations working in the visual, performing, and literary arts. Funds are awarded to those that advocate for the arts as a basic, central part of lifelong learning in their community. The Public Art Forward Grant provides funding specifically for one work of public art in downtown Harrisonburg, VA each year from 2023 through 2025.

Grant Period

Made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Public Art Forward grant supports creation and installation of a new work of public art in downtown Harrisonburg each year for 2023, 2024, and 2025.

Eligibility Criteria

Individuals who:

  • Have not received an ACV grant of any type in the past twelve (12) months.
  • Are eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of application
  • Are not enrolled as degree-seeking students at the time of application or during the grant period.
  • Have submitted all required reports for any prior ACV grants
  • Are not current board members, employees of ACV, or immediate family members of such persons

Public Art Forward Grant proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Location
    • Appropriateness, safety, and feasibility of site selected by artist; with documented approval of proposal by site owner.
  • Artistic Merit
    • The aesthetic quality of the artist’s past work, including content, craftsmanship, uniqueness and relevance to its environment.
  • Theme
    • Artwork must complement the character of the location and be responsive to the area’s diverse populations. Submissions of artwork that are overtly sexual, political, or religious in nature will not be reviewed.
  • Experience
    • The degree to which the artist’s past work relates to the Public Art Forward project.
  • Ability
    • The artist’s demonstrated ability to translate art concepts into durable and safe materials that can withstand long-term exposure in an outdoor environment; and to complete the project within the grant period.
  • Project Sustainability
    • Evidence that artist’s existing public artworks have maintained an appropriate level of quality and integrity over time.
  • Concept Quality
    • Artistic excellence, creativity and originality of the proposal concept.
  • Technical Practicality
    • The technical feasibility of the proposed artwork/installation, including minimum maintenance requirements, resistance to vandalism and appropriateness for public viewing, use and access.
  • Budget
    • The proposed budget will be evaluated on its feasibility for the nature and scope of the project, and an analysis of whether the artist has done appropriate research and obtained viable cost estimates from subcontractors and suppliers. Proposed budgets must include all design, materials, fabrication, delivery, installation, assistants, insurance, travel, and other costs associated with the project.
  • References
    • Professional references that positively attest to the artist’s ability to undertake public art projects of this size and scope.
