Community Climate Action Grants to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Virginia)

Dated: March 17, 2023

The County of Albemarle is seeking applications for its Community Climate Action Grant to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Albemarle County.

Donor Name: County of Albemarle

State: Virginia

County: Albemarle County (VA)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline: 04/30/2023

Size of the Grant: $5,000 to $25,000

Details:

The Community Climate Action Grant program supports creative local projects that build capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Albemarle County. The program’s purpose is to leverage community resources outside local government to help implement the County’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in 2020 by the Board of Supervisors. These Community Climate Action Grants will help make local climate action a more inclusive, participatory process.

Structured grants, a simplified small grant option, are tailored to specific types of projects, such as developing a disaster plan for a small repository, acquiring microfilm, or conducting a museum self-assessment.

Program Goals

Funds will be awarded to projects that address four program goals:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • Advance community equity and inclusion
  • Benefit the local community beyond reducing emissions
  • Support thoughtful and achievable initiatives

Project Categories

2023 is the pilot year for this program, so they don’t yet have past grantee projects to showcase. Here are a few categories of projects that could be undertaken:

  • Increase building energy efficiency
  • Support low- or zero-emission transportation
  • Increase renewable energy generation
  • Minimize waste and/or consumption of valuable resources
  • Support regenerative land management and agricultural practices
  • Several other communities around the United States have launched community climate action grant programs in recent years. Projects from these communities have included:
    • Energy efficient insulation, windows, doors, and lighting at a local community bike library to reduce energy consumption and boost community use through an improved experience
    • Installation of bike racks at popular community destinations to improve overall bike infrastructure
    • Purchase of equipment to help community members create biochar from yard waste
    • Installation of native and edible plants in a local arboretum
    • Enhanced recycling infrastructure at several local schools.

Funding Information

Grant requests may range from $5,000 to $25,000. The request can represent the total proposed project budget or a fraction of a larger project budget with additional funding sources beyond Albemarle County.  The total amount of funding available for the pilot year (2023) is $100,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Organizations or groups applying must be principally and physically located in Albemarle County.
  • Any applicant or partnering group located outside of Albemarle County must demonstrate that the population or area served will primarily be people or places within Albemarle County.
  • Eligible applicants include:
    • Nonprofit organizations with 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status
    • Community-based organizations affiliated with a 501(c) (3) willing to serve as a fiscal sponsor.
