The City of Kalamazoo’s Historic Preservation Commission (KHPC) is excited to announce the launch of its KHPC/O’Connor Fund Competitive Grant Program.

Details:

The O’Connor Fund for Historic Preservation was created to support the Kalamazoo Historic Preservation Commission in carrying out its duties. These duties include working with owners of historic properties and supporting appropriate preservation or redevelopment.

In 2022, the KHPC developed the O’Connor Fund/KHPC Competitive Grant Program to support preservation projects in two types: building rehabilitation and preservation planning.

Funding Information

Grants of between $2,000 and $10,000.

Eligible Project Types

  • Building Rehabilitation projects
    • qualified work includes: work on the building exterior, including costs associated with: roofs & chimneys, walls, windows and doors, fire escapes, elevators, and other exterior components. All work must meet the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. All projects must be reviewed in advance by the City’s Historic Preservation Coordinator and some projects may require approval of the Kalamazoo Historic District Commission.
  • Preservation Planning project
    • qualified work includes: economic feasibility studies, Historic Building Condition reports, preparing architectural rehabilitation plans, National or Local Historic District study reports and nominations, and other preservation planning activities as determined by the Committee. All work under this category must be carried out or supervised by a qualified professional with experience in the project’s associated field, meet the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation, and be approved by the Historic Preservation Coordinator.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible projects must meet the following criteria:

  • located in the City of Kalamazoo
  • owned by a 501(c)(3) or other non-profit organization, public agency, or governmental unit operating in the City of Kalamazoo,
  • a building that is 50+ years old, or a project where a majority of contributing resources are 50+ years old
  • originally constructed as one of the following building types: Institutional, Educational, Civic, Societal, Cultural, Sacred, Entertainment or other historic non-profit types as determined by the grants committee.
  • align with the appropriate City, County and State plans whose links are provided on the Program’s web page
