Apply Now for Patient Safety Challenge Fellowship (Pennsylvania)

Dated: May 2, 2023

Are you interested in designing from Scratch a new Healthcare System that meets your needs and incorporates Modern Technology? If yes, then apply for the 2023 Patient Safety Challenge Fellowship!

Donor Name: Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative

State: Pennsylvania

City: Pittsburgh

Type of Grant: Fellowship

Deadline: 05/07/2023

Size of the Grant: $5,000

Details:

The 19th annual Patient Safety Fellowship is looking toward the future. Renamed the Patient Safety Challenge Fellowship this summer, fellows will reimagine health care starting from a patient/family perspective and designing it to be vastly safer. Leaving legacy systems behind, fellows will produce a vision of a safer, more accessible and effective model of care. Fellows will have access to mentors – nationally recognized leaders in patient safety – to help shape their vision over the summer. The curriculum will inform the fellows’ understanding of the existing patient safety landscape and opportunities for reinventing the system.

The Patient Safety Challenge Fellowship is hosted by the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative, Jewish Healthcare Foundation, and Health Careers Futures. This Fellowship is part of the broader Patient Safety Technology Challenge and is only available to applicants able to attend sessions in-person in Pittsburgh.

Fellows will be envisioning a transformative approach for a vastly safer healthcare system. The fellow groups should focus on reinventing who delivers what care, where, when, and how, incorporating modern technology, new professional roles, new education methods, and new construction to achieve safe, optimal care. Teams should begin with the patient or family perspective and design the care to best meet their needs.

The outcome will be a concept presentation that teams of participants will assemble and showcase in-person at the expo-style Finale on August 17, 2023. Academic and healthcare leaders from the Pittsburgh region will be invited to the finale to hear fellows ideas.

Teams will reinvent health care (and are encouraged to consider a total redesign), and visions will be assessed on the following dimensions:

  • Patient and Family Engagement
    • How will patients and family members be engaged to make care safer and more protective of their welfare?
  • Equity
    • How could they bring safer and more responsive health care to populations that are poorly served by their current system?
  • Technology
    • What modern technologies can create safer care which might include faster, better, cheaper, and easier care?
  • Healthcare Delivery
    • Where should patients receive care? How can modern technology and new scientific discoveries deliver more personalized and effective care? Could more care be automated without causing harm?
  • Workforce
    • Who will deliver care? Consider new professional roles and new members of the workforce of tomorrow. Consider changing current practices, scopes of work for traditional professions, and training and education of health professionals—all enabled by technology. How could health systems relieve stress and reintroduce joy for frontline workers?
  • Accountability
    • Who will be accountable for continuous improvements in safety and quality? How can they do better than they do now?
