Priorities

Priority will be given to those events and entities based on their ability to generate overnight stays in Brenham & Washington County. Entities can prove this potential to generate overnight visitors by:

  • Historical information on the number of room nights used during previous years of the same events;
  • Current information on the size of a room block that has been reserved at area hotels to accommodate anticipated overnight guests attending the event requesting hotel tax funds;
  • Historical information on the number of guests at hotels or other lodging facilities that attended the funded event; and/or
  • Providing examples of marketing programs and activities that are likely to generate and encourage overnight visitors to local lodging properties.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Chapter 351 of the Tax Code states that funds must be used only to promote tourism and the hotel and convention industry directly and must fit into one or more of the nine (9) eligible categories for funding. These categories include:
    • Funding the establishment, improvement, or maintenance of a convention center or visitor information center.
    • Paying the administrative costs for facilitating convention registration.
    • Paying for advertising, solicitation, and promotions that attract tourists and convention delegates.
    • Expenditures that promote the arts. (Please note that it is not enough that an organization, facility, or event promote the arts; state law requires that the expenditure also must be likely to directly promote tourism and the hotel and convention industry.)
    • Funding historical restoration or preservation programs. (Please note that it is not enough that an organization, facility, or event promote restoration or preservation programs; state law requires that the expenditure also must be likely to directly promote tourism and the hotel and convention industry.)
    • Certain sporting event-related expenses.
    • Certain sporting related structures
    • Certain tourist shuttles
    • Signage directing tourists to attractions frequently visited by overnight guests
  • Applicants applying for HOT funds to advertise an event must focus funds on targeting visitors outside a 50-mile radius of Brenham/Washington County.
