Since 2001, the ArtStart Grant Program has been a catalyst for cultural activity in the local Newark arts community. The program offers mini-grants to community members, schools, non-profits and individual artists with the aim of nurturing a broad spectrum of arts and cultural activities involving young people and/or taking place in our neighborhoods. By seeding these innovative programs, Newark Arts continues to fulfill its mission of powering the arts in locations that are often overlooked by traditional programs, and stimulating economic and cultural activity on a hyper-local level.
Priorities
Newark Arts will give paramount consideration to projects that:
- Enhance recognition of the value of the arts as a catalyst to address social issues
- Engage with neighborhood or community based organizations and are developed to address their identified needs
- Take place in local neighborhoods, stimulating creativity and community engagement
- Engage children, youth and/or seniors and people with special needs
- Support academic achievement
- Are provided by small organizations and individual artists, enhancing their future capacity
Funding Information
A selection committee representing a broad spectrum of the community considers all proposals. Since its inception, Newark Arts has made over 200 grant awards ranging from $500 to $3,000, and totaling over $500,000!
Grant Period
ArtStart events must take place between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023.
Eligibility Criteria
- Organizations that wish to provide a community-based arts program within the City of Newark are eligible to apply. However, to request this grant, your organization must either be
- a federally tax-exempt, section 501(c)3 charitable organization with an annual budget of less than $1 million
- an accredited school or public agency.
- Individual artist projects must partner with a non-profit organization, school, or agency serving as their fiscal agent. An MOU is required as evidence of this relationship.
- Organizations with no IRS determination letter must partner with a tax-exempt organization that will serve as a fiscal agent.

- Newark schools (public, private and charter) may apply for support of summer and in or out of school time creative arts projects
