Details:

The LWCF is administered by Massachusetts on behalf of the National Park Service (NPS), an agency of the Department of the Interior. The LWCF program provides grants to states and local governments and federally recognized Indian tribes for the acquisition and development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The program is intended to create and maintain a nationwide legacy of high-quality recreation areas and facilities and to stimulate non-federal investments in the protection and maintenance of recreation resources across the United States.

The Federal Land & Water Conservation Fund provides up to 50% of the total project cost for the acquisition, development, and renovation of:

  • Parks
  • Trails
  • Conservation areas

Funding Information

LWCF funding is made available by the NPS and is administered for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by the Division of Conservation Services. As the NPS does not set a specific maximum grant award, DCS has set the maximum reimbursement at $1,000,000 and the minimum grant reimbursement at $50,000. Applicants must submit the type of appraisal appropriate for their project (if applicable), the estimated total project cost, and a specific grant request as part of the application package.

Eligible Projects

Eligible projects include:

  • Acquisition of parkland or conservation land
  • Creation of new parks
  • Renovations to existing parks
  • Development of trails

Eligible applicants include:

  • Municipalities that have an up-to-date Open Space and Recreation Plan
  • Department of Conservation and Recreation
  • Department of Fish and Game
