Watershed Stewardship Grant for San Francisco’s Watersheds and Sewer Infrastructure

Dated: November 29, 2021

The San Francisco Community Challenge Grant Program (CCG) partners with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is seeking applications for its Watershed Stewardship Grant Program.

Donor Name: San Francisco Community Challenge Grant Program (CCG)

State: California

County: San Francisco County/city (CA)

Type of Grant: Grant

Deadline (mm/dd/yyyy): 12/03/2021

Size of the Grant: $75,001 – $150,000

Grant Duration: 12-18 Months

Details:

The Urban Watershed Stewardship Grant (WSG) is based on the idea that small individual actions by San Francisco watershed stewards add up to large benefits for San Francisco’s watersheds and sewer infrastructure. The CCG and the SFPUC hope that this partnership will encourage groups to apply for funding to implement Green Stormwater Infrastructure projects in their neighborhood.

Funding Levels

Funds are awarded for WSG projects at two levels:

  • Budget
    • Mid-Scale: $15,001 – $75,000
    • Large-Scale: $75,001 – $150,000
  • Duration/Contract Period:
    • Mid-Scale: 9-12 Months
    • Large-Scale: 12-18 months

General Eligibility Criteria

Applicant Organizations Nonprofit organizations, community groups, merchant associations, community benefit district organizations and schools are eligible to apply for funding. Groups applying for the grant must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization or identify a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to serve as their fiscal sponsor to be awarded a grant. The grant contractor must be an approved and compliant City supplier.

Eligible Projects

To receive WSG funding, a project will:

  • Harvest and use rainwater
  • Remove impervious surfaces
  • Implement green stormwater infrastructure (i.e. rain gardens, bioretention planters, permeable pavement, etc.)
  • Be publicly visible and/or accessible

Five Key Eligibility Requirements

  • CCG provides grants to the following types of organizations:
    • Nonprofit organizations
    • Community or neighborhood groups
    • San Francisco businesses or merchant associations
    • San Francisco based Community Benefit Districts (CBDs)
    • Schools
  • Grantees must meet vendor requirements of the City and County of San Francisco. CCG funds are issued to San Francisco vendor approved nonprofit organizations with a 501 (c) 3 status. Local community groups, businesses, or schools performing a community project in their neighborhood must have a nonprofit fiscal sponsor. The grant contractor must be an approved and compliant City supplier.
  • Unlike other CCG grant programs that fund a flexible variety of projects, the WSG only supports projects implementing green infrastructure to improve San Francisco’s watersheds and sewer infrastructure. Eligible projects must harvest and use rainwater, remove impervious surfaces, and/or implement green stormwater infrastructure (i.e. rain gardens, permeable pavement, bioretention planters, etc.) in a publicly visible and/or accessible space.
  • Projects must demonstrate minimum requirements, and should:
    • Have a 5-year maintenance plan detailing ongoing maintenance after project completion. Please identify an individual or entity responsible for maintenance as well as the source of funds to support proposed maintenance plan.
    • Emphasize self-help and involve neighborhood residents in the planning and implementation of the project.
    • Include design installation of interpretive signs explaining the stormwater function of the project to the public and naming the project partners and funders, including their logos.
  • Projects must not:
    • Duplicate or replace funding for an existing private or public program
    • Duplicate existing maintenance programs
    • Conflict with existing City policies
