Details:

The program’s purpose is to assist commercial building owners in undertaking façade improvements that would serve to improve both their buildings and the surrounding neighborhood.

Funding Information

  • Currently, there is $40,000 in uncommitted funding available for Knoxville Facade Improvement Grants this year. In April, City Council is expected to approve the fiscal year 2026 municipal budget and increase the available funding by another $50,000, for a total of $90,000.
  • Matching 50% reimbursement grants of up to $10,000 are available under this program.

Eligible Costs

Façade Improvement Grants can be used to reimburse award recipients for the following costs:

  • Removal of metal, vinyl, or wood siding that has been used to cover the original brick façade and any added structural elements to support such siding
  • Repairs to the original façade
  • Repairs to existing cornices, pediments, or coping
  • Replacement of, or repairs to, front entry stairs
  • Installation, repair, or replacement of entry ramps for the mobility challenged if appropriate;
  • Replacement of exterior doors
  • Replacement of main floor and upper storey windows
  • Exterior stairs to upper storey housing, where such stairs are required to meet the local building and fire codes
  • The addition of new, or the replacement of existing, awnings
  • The removal, replacement, or repair of storefront canopies
  • Installation, repair, or replacement of exterior accent lighting designed to highlight the storefront
  • Exterior façade painting where appropriate
  • Design, architectural, or engineering fees as needed to undertake the project.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Applicant Eligibility: Any owner of a commercial building located in the area of eligibility may apply for a façade improvement grant. Building tenants may apply if the building owner has agreed in writing for the work to be undertaken at the cost of the tenant.
  • Building Eligibility: Commercial buildings are eligible for Façade Improvement Grants if they are located in the Downtown, on W Pleasant or Lincoln Streets.
