Newark Arts established the ArtStart Grant Program in 2001 specifically to nurture arts and cultural activities throughout the City of Newark and to enhance the capacity of Newark’s non-profit organizations, schools, and individual artists to provide arts-based projects throughout the City’s five wards.
Newark Arts will give paramount consideration to projects that:
- Enhance recognition of the value of the arts as a catalyst to address social issues
- Engage with neighborhood or community based organizations and are developed to address their identified needs
- Take place in local neighborhoods, stimulating creativity and community engagement
- Engage children, youth and/or seniors and people with special needs
- Support academic achievement
- Are provided by small organizations and individual artists, enhancing their future capacity.
Funding Information
For ArtStart 2025, grants will be awarded at two levels—$3,500 and $5,000—based on the project’s budget and the overall strength of the application. Applicants may request up to a maximum of $5,000.
Grant Period
Take place between August 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.
Who is eligible?
- Newark Arts, with the aim of nurturing a broad spectrum of arts and cultural activities in the neighborhoods provides the ArtStart mini grants to:
- community members,
- schools,
- non-profits
- and individual artists.
- The program aims to provide seed money for new, innovative, community-led art initiatives established within the last 5 years.
- Program must be in the City of Newark and for the benefit of Newark Residents.
Application Requirements
- Request Start-Up Funding: Propose financial support for a new arts or cultural initiative established within the last five (5) years.
- Leverage the Arts to Address Social Issues: Demonstrate a clear understanding of how the arts can serve as a catalyst for addressing and raising awareness of pressing social challenges.
- Collaborate with Community-Based Organizations: Engage meaningfully with neighborhood or community-based organizations to identify and address their specific needs.
- Focus on Local Neighborhoods Beyond Downtown Newark: Implement projects that stimulate creativity and foster community engagement in neighborhoods outside of the Downtown Newark area.
- Serve Underserved Communities: Prioritize outreach and engagement with traditionally underserved populations, including children under 18, seniors, and individuals with diverse abilities.
- Foster Partnerships Between Small Organizations and Individual Artists: Encourage collaborations that strengthen the capacity and impact of both small organizations and individual artists.
