The Maine Forest Service is pleased to announce the availability of grants for community forestry projects under the Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act Grant Program.

Details:

Through Project Canopy, a program by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Forest Service, a total of $1,000,000 in grants will be offered, comprising $250,000 in Project Canopy Assistance grants and $750,000 in Inflation Reduction Act Urban and Community Forestry grants.

Project Canopy Goals

  • Increase the number of managing community forestry programs.
  • Stimulate and heighten public awareness of what the community forest is, its role and benefits.
  • Create and maintain partnerships.
  • Promote comprehensive resource management of community forests and related natural resources.

These grants aim to support projects in the following categories:

  • Project Canopy Assistance Planning and Education
    • Project Canopy estimates that approximately $125,000 will be available for this grant program. This amount is contingent on federal and state funding levels. Applicants are eligible to request up to $20,000 in federal funds under this program. The grant period is from June 1, 2024, to October 31, 2025.
    • Projects focus on sustainable community forestry management and increasing awareness of the benefits of trees and forests.
  • Project Canopy Planting and Maintenance
    • Project Canopy estimates that approximately $125,000 will be available for this grant program. This amount is contingent on federal and state funding levels. Applicants are eligible to request up to $15,000 in federal funds under this program. The grant period is from June 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
    • Projects enhance community health and livability through proper tree planting and maintenance.
  • Inflation Reduction Act Urban & Community Forestry
    • The amount of grant dollars available to the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Forest Service (MFS) for this grant program is approximately $750,000. Applicants are eligible to submit proposals from $25,000 to $200,000. The grant period is from June 1, 2024, to June 30, 2026.
    • Projects encompass a wide range of activities, including urban and community tree canopy establishment, urban wood utilization, urban food forests, workforce development, climate mitigation through tree planting, community tree nursery establishment, and building an understanding of the care and management of community trees.

Eligibility Criteria

Project Canopy is seeking proposals from municipal governments, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions that support community forestry planning and education projects in Maine communities.
