The program goal is to provide art experiences for diverse populations in North Dakota.

Funding Information

  • Grant Award Range $1,250 maximum request
  • A 1:1 match is required
Project Period
  • Earliest Project Start Date: March 1, 2022
  • Latest Project End Date: June 30, 2022

This Program Funds:

  • Initiating new art events of all disciplines/forms (in person or online) including, but not limited to, exhibitions, performances, and festivals. Examples: An individual artist requests funds to work with a web designer and photographer for an online event that has not been done before, that will support engaging sustainable audiences and initiating new business practices. An annual art festival requests funds to initiate a new music performance series for youth. A fiscally sponsored group requests funds to stage a musical for a public performance that has not been done before. A city or chamber of commerce requests funds to incorporate art programs into a community gathering.
  • Murals, sculptures, or installation of public art pieces, or publications that include community input and participation.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be one of the following:

  • Individual artist
  • North Dakota State tax-exempt nonprofit arts organization
  • Federally tax-exempt nonprofit arts organization
  • Federally tax-exempt non-arts organizations and community education units – Arts budgets must be isolated from the larger entity’s budget.
  • Public Entity such as a unit of state, local, or tribal government
  • An affiliate arts presenting or producing organization hosted within a North Dakota 501(c)(3) tax-exempt institution or public institution that meets the requirements of an arts affiliate – An affiliate and its host organization may not both apply for a grant. An arts affiliate is a distinct program or division within a public or 501(c)(3) nonprofit nonarts organization (such as an arts division of a city or tribal government, a public or nonprofit college or university, or a community service nonprofit) that provides arts programming or services that primarily serve the general public. It has a distinct and separate budget from the host organization for arts programming with multiple charitable sources.
  • Fiscally sponsored groups with arts projects – A fiscally sponsored group must be comprised of at least three people, have an advisory committee of at least three people that is responsible for oversight of project and grant funds, and a fiscal sponsor. Fiscal sponsors must be registered with the IRS as a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Additional Eligibility Guidelines for Individual Artists

  • Be a United States citizen or have attained permanent resident status;
  • Be at least 18 years of age on the application’s due date;
  • Be a North Dakota resident and continue to reside in North Dakota throughout the contract period;
  • Cannot be enrolled as a full-time student.

Additional Eligibility Guidelines for Organizations

  • Organizations must be physically located in North Dakota, Moorhead, MN, or East Grand Forks, MN.
  • Majority of arts programming, services, or activities must take place in North Dakota, and primarily serve and engage North Dakota audiences and participants.
