The intent of the Supporting Recovery Programs Persons Who Wander Grant Program is to provide grant funding to assist local governments or their designees in locating persons with medical conditions such as alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, autism, brain injury, or developmental, cognitive, neurological, or chromosomal disorders by encouraging county sheriffs’ departments, municipalities, and county or municipal designees to establish recovery programs and provide tools that will increase the chances of saving the lives of lost and missing persons.

Eligible Activities

The grant funding may be used by a county, any combination of counties, municipality, any combination of municipalities, any combination of counties and municipalities, or designees for the following purposes only:

  • Equipment costs
  • Technology costs
  • Training of search personnel
  • Outreach about recovery programs for persons who wander
  • Any other costs required to implement or maintain a recovery program for persons who wander

Required Application Components

All grant applications must address all of the following:

  • The specific activity the grant would fund
  • Verification that participants in the recovery program for persons who wander are enrolled by their caregiver
  • An estimate of the number of people who are at risk of wandering and might qualify for assistance in the community under the recovery program for persons who wander
  • An estimate of the startup or maintenance cost of the recovery program for persons who wander
  • Demonstration of working with organizations who provide services to individuals with medical conditions such as alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, autism, brain injury, or developmental, cognitive, neurological, or chromosomal disorders, that may cause them to wander
  • Description of how information will be provided to any family member of a participant in a recovery program for persons who wander about wandering, how to prevent wandering, and how to respond to wandering
  • Description of availability of local funding sources

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible grant recipients include:

  • County, Combination of Counties, or County’s Designee
  • Municipality, Combination of Municipalities, or Municipality’s Designee
  • Any combination of counties and municipalities or designees

Counties, municipalities, and designees may submit grant applications jointly.
