Continuation of the study requires both knowledge of, and access to, the NHATS and NSOC sample frames. Therefore, this RFA is limited to investigators and institutions with access to the NHATS and NSOC sample frame, as the frame will be used to contact and collect new data from participants. This RFA aims to provide additional research opportunities to use NHATS to formally study disability and Alzheimers disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD).  This single integrated award combining NHATS and NSOC seeks to implement the comments of the NHATS Data Monitoring Committee to include continued the core elements of NHATS/NSOC and expand content to include enhanced cognitive/dementia measures, new sensory measures, richer dementia care measures, life course measures to capture sources of health disparities, improved residential care data, and an expanded accelerometry sample to facilitate AD/ADRD research that could enhance research targeting related NIA Dementia Care Milestones.

Research Objectives

  • The primary research objective of this NOFO is to combine and continue the NHATS and NSOC studies for a new 5-year period (i.e., renewal) to support the study of disability at older ages with specific enhancements intended to support novel and generalizable dementia care research.  A fundamental activity of this NOFO is to continue “Core” study aims of the NHATS and NSOC (the combined study hereafter referred to as NHATS). Therefore, applications must outline plans to conduct Core Activities, including the following:
    • Sustain longitudinal design and periodicity
    • Maintain and expand administrative/program data linkages
    • Continue distribution, dissemination, and user support for all study data
    • Provide a multidisciplinary and collaborative organizational and management structure
  • In addition to the Core Activities, the application must include rationales and plans to add the following Enhancement Activities to the NHATS:
    • Expand Accelerometry
    • Enhance Data to Support Health Disparities Research
    • Participant Response Rates
    • Sensory Measurement
    • Enhance Residential Care Data
    • End of Life Measures
    • Cognition Measures.
