2023 Request for Applications for Arbor Rising Grant

Dated: May 30, 2023

The Arbor Rising is currently accepting for its 2023 grantmaking cycle to all interested and eligible nonprofit organizations.

Donor Name: Arbor Rising

States: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut

Type of Grant: Grant

County: All Counties

Deadline: 06/20/2023

Size of the Grant: $125,000–$150,000

Details:

Arbor Rising currently supports nonprofit organizations in the NY-NJ-CT area that are:

  • Second-Stage – Observable program with a modest budget
  • Building a Path Out of Poverty – Making deep investments to support sustained economic mobility for those living in poverty, rather than providing short-term solutions. Their grantees often focus on education, youth development and job training.
  • High-potential – Relentless and humble leadership employing a model designed to produce meaningful social outcomes

Funding Priorities

Arbor Rising supports nonprofit organizations in the NY-NJ-CT area that are:

  • Second-Stage
    • Operating an observable program with a modest budget (historically, grantees average 5 years of operations when first funded)
  • High potential
    • Committed leadership employing a model which has produced (or is on track to produce) meaningful outcomes for program participants
  • Building individuals’ pathways out of poverty
    • Organizational models that create meaningful opportunities for low-income individuals to achieve economic mobility, typically in the fields of education, youth development and job training.

In each of their grantee projects, they co-develop customized tools, deliverables, and plans—nothing comes off the proverbial shelf. The work is geared toward developing grantee competencies in key areas, including but not limited to:

  • Strategy Development: theory of change, earned-income strategies, and growth plans
  • Financial Management: true cost accounting and projecting multi-year budgets
  • Data Analysis: quantifying metrics, developing tracking systems, and program evaluation
  • Stakeholder Management: board development, employee performance management, and executive coaching

Funding Information

Grantees that enter the Arbor Rising portfolio in 2023 will receive $100,000 and can expect future support in the $125,000–$150,000 range.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Have 501(c)(3) status or be fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3) organization
  • Have at least one full-time staff person
  • Have an observable program in place
  • Have an annual local budget of more than $200,000 and less than $2,500,000 (excepting schools)
  • Directly serve individuals living in (or plan imminent expansion into) New York, New Jersey and/or Connecticut

Exclusions from grant consideration:

  • For-profit entities
  • Individuals, scholarships, or endowments
  • Political parties
  • Sectarian entities (religious, political or ideological in nature) whose services are limited to a particular sect or who require participants to adhere to a specific dogma, political point of view or religious practice in order to receive services
