Focus Areas

  • Community Development: Activities which foster civil rights, their society, advocacy, community improvement, capacity building, philanthropy, volunteerism, grant making, or strong neighborhoods; which improve the effectiveness of government, public administration and public officials; or which support the programs of leadership organizations.
  • Education: Activities that improve the educational attainment of children and adults, both in and out of the classroom; which support formally constituted educational institutions and organizations or entities that administer or support these institutions; which support libraries and organizations whose primary purpose is to provide opportunities for supplementing and continuing education outside the framework of formal education institutions; or that support organizations which provide education-related services to students and schools.
  • Health: Activities which improve and promote health outcomes;  which provide general and rehabilitative health services; which support mental health or crisis intervention; including associations or services associated with specific diseases, disorders, and medical disciplines; and medical research.
  • Human Services: Activities which maximize the functioning of special needs populations in mainstream society; which protect the public; which promote and support employment and jobs, food and nutrition, agriculture, housing and shelter, public safety, and disaster preparedness and relief; and which support child daycare programs, social services, and programs of community centers.
  • Environment: Activities which foster pollution control and abatement, protection and conservation of natural resources, botanic and horticulture, environment beautification, preservation of open spaces, environment education and outdoor survival, protection and welfare of animals, humane societies, wildlife preservation and protection, veterinary services, zoos and aquariums, and specialty animal services.
  • Youth Development: Activities that strengthen the family unit; which foster the healthy growth and development of children; and which support youth engagement programs focused on physical health, mental health, education success, or life skills. 

Funding Information

They are excited to announce a $300,000 special 30th Anniversary Grant opportunity.

Applications will be evaluated with a focus on the following priorities:

  • Transformational Change: The proposed activities are intended to significantly impact the underlying conditions of a social problem or community need; and are highly likely to result in long-term, sustainable changes for the community or target population.
  • Measurable Outcomes: The proposed activities align with evidence-based or best practice models, and the proposal includes well-developed, logical plans for determining program success.
  • Collaboration: The proposed program or project involves collaboration amongst two or more community organizations and reflects efficient use of resources and/or minimizes duplication of efforts.   
  • Sustainability: The proposed program or project includes a well-thought-out, reasonable plan for sustainability beyond the Vanderburgh Community Foundation’s grant.
  • Recognition and Awareness: Proposed activities provide opportunities to increase the visibility of the Vanderburgh Community Foundation and the recipient organization and/or create opportunities to further leadership roles in the community. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Requests will be considered from nonprofit organizations that are deemed tax-exempt under 501(c)(3) and 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Applications from nonprofit organizations not classified as a 501(c)(3) public charity may be considered provided the program or project is charitable and supports a community need.  The applicant organization may be required to obtain a fiscal sponsor to receive the grant.
