Bernalillo County announces Call for Artists in New Mexico

Dated: March 17, 2022

The Bernalillo County Arts Board solicits a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for artists or artists’ teams for a site-specific public art project that will be located along the expansion of Sunport Boulevard in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Donor Name: Bernalillo County

State: New Mexico

Type of Grant: Program

Deadline: 04/07/2022

Size of the Grant: $60,000

Details:

Artists working in a variety of media including sculpture, murals, and mosaics are invited to apply. The artwork may be installed in one or multiple locations along the expansion, which is roughly 0.5 miles in length from Interstate 25 to Broadway Boulevard. The design of the project should have a strong visual impact for both motorists and pedestrians traveling on Sunport Boulevard.

Project Intent/Theme

The artwork will be culturally relevant and represent the history, heritage, and landscapes of the communities along Sunport Boulevard. The goals of the project are to 1) create a landmark public artwork; 2) engage with the multigenerational communities along Sunport Boulevard to generate the theme and final design for the artwork; 3) explore the past, present and future identities of the communities in the Sunport area.

The design of the project should have a strong visual impact for both motorists as well as pedestrians utilizing the boulevard. The artist or artists’ team selected for the project will work closely with the communities in the area to develop a concept that captures the history, traditions, and cultures of the region. The winning artist or team will be responsible for all aspects of design and installation.

The budget for the project is $60,000 and a variety of media including sculpture, murals, and mosaics will be considered.
