Arts & Culture is a vital segment of New Bedford’s economy and community that has huge impacts on quality of life and job creation, with significant potential growth and development opportunities for existing and emerging cultural enterprises.
The City therefore is seeking Expressions of Interest from owners and operators of privately owned cultural facilities – for-profit or nonprofit – that are seeking financial support for capital investments such as building stabilization; roof repair; improved outdoor spaces; audio-visual equipment that enables “hybrid” events, such as remote participation in live events; renovations that increase or improve occupancy; and more.
Funding Information
- The minimum grant award is $100,000 and the maximum grant award is $400,000.
- This means that that total project cost must by at least $125,000, inclusive of matching funds.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet ALL following requirements to be considered for this grant opportunity.
- Lead applicant must be a New Bedford -based non-profit or for-profit organization that owns or operates a privately-owned cultural facility. For-profit entities will need to include well-defined public purposes and/or public benefits that the for-profit entity will commit to as part of the overall project proposal.
- Cultural facilities are here defined to mean “a building, structure, or site that is owned or operated by one or more cultural organizations that provides service and open access to the community and the general public.” Cultural organizations include organizations that enable public access to and participation with the arts, history, and humanities as well as organizations that help preserve and promote the customs and cultural heritage of a group or groups of people.
- Applicant must be able to demonstrate a negative fiscal impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic OR be located in or proposing projects in New Bedford’s HUD-defined Qualified Census Tracts.
- Proposed project must be for capital projects, which includes fixed, one-time expenses, such as incurred on the purchase of land/buildings, construction, and equipment.
- Must be ready to begin work within one calendar year.
- Applicant must own the property where the proposed project will be located or be engaged in a long-term lease and have the permission of the property owner.
