Before submitting an application for a grant, potential applicants should first review information about foundation’s Focus Areas and the Health Equity Framework:

  • Early Childhood Development
    • Early childhood development is defined by the Foundation as the process of growth that occurs prenatally through the first five years of life. Improving the health and wellness of Spartanburg County through a focus on early childhood development will require efforts that address:
      • Children’s relationships with families and other caregiver
      • Children’s physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development
      • Adolescent pregnancy and improving birth outcomes
  • Healthy Eating | Active Living
    • Healthy Eating refers to the availability and affordability of fresh healthy foods in communities, schools, workplaces, and places of worship, regardless of income and geographic location.
    • Active Living refers to a way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines. In addition to recreational exercise, active living includes moderate forms of activity such as walking or bicycling for transportation, taking the stairs, or working in the yard.
  • Community Health Fund
    • In addition to investing in Foundation’s two priority areas, the Mary Black Foundation promotes health and wellness in Spartanburg County, SC through the Community Health Fund (CHF). The CHF is an annual grantmaking opportunity for projects outside of the Foundation’s Early Childhood Development and Healthy Eating | Active Living priority areas and, generally, represents 10-20% of the Foundation’s total grantmaking.
  • Health Equity Framework
    • The Mary Black Foundation believes that health and wellness are basic human rights. A health equity framework guides in achieving their mission to invest in people and communities for improved health, wellness, and success in Spartanburg County. Health equity exists when all people have access to opportunities to thrive, both physically and mentally, and no one is limited in achieving health and wellness because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, ability, sexual orientation, age, income, or zip code.
