The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted individuals living with or at risk of eating disorders. Eating disorders are serious and often fatal illnesses associated with severe disturbances in people’s eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions (National Institute of Mental Health, 2021). Projects funded through this initiative will focus on one or more of the following eating disorders:

  • anorexia nervosa, a condition where people avoid food, severely restrict food, or eat very small quantities of only certain foods;
  • bulimia, a condition where people have recurrent and frequent episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food and feeling a lack of control over these episodes followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as purging;
  • binge-eating disorder, a condition where people lose control over their eating and have reoccurring episodes of eating unusually large amounts of food; and/or
  • avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), previously known as selective eating disorder, a condition where people limit the amount or type of food eaten resulting in not eating enough calories to grow or to maintain basic body function (National Institute of Mental Health, 2021).
