The Program is seeking applications from schools and/or youth organizations that represent and serve youth and students (particularly those with proximity to local fishing communities) for assistance with engagement strategies.
Donor Name: Public Health — Seattle & King County (PHSKC)
State: Washington
Type of Grant: Grant
Deadline: 08/01/2022
Size of the Grant: $80,000
Details:
In 2017, PHSKC launched the Fun to Catch, Toxic to Eat Program (“Program”) as part of US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) effort to clean up the Duwamish River Superfund Site. Under a Cooperative Agreement with the EPA, PHSKC is leading this community-based program to protect the health of fishing communities, especially pregnant women, nursing moms and young children, from the contaminated seafood in the Duwamish River Superfund Site. The only seafood safe to eat from the Duwamish River are salmon.
The goal of the planning phase is to build your organization’s staff capacity about the environmental contamination in the Duwamish River and safe fishing and consumption practices; and then design a health promotion, outreach, and education plan (with possible tools, activities and incentives) that can increase awareness, knowledge and healthy practices among the specific fishing community that you intend to reach, particularly mobilizing youth programs. Program staff will provide existing information, tools and data that will be helpful to finalizing the design before implementation.
Objectives/Timeline/Budget
There are four components to this two-year project:
- build internal staff capacity around the Program’s issues and messaging
- design a culturally appropriate health promotion/education plan (this may include creating a tool and/or activity) with engagement with representatives of the target community
- implement the proposed plan as a pilot project and collect any feedback and evaluation form ongoing partnership building with the Program.
Funding Information
Funding for the Planning Phase is not to exceed $45,000, and the Implementation Phase funding will not exceed $80,000, bringing the estimated total Agreement value to $125,000.
