SAMHSA: Provider’s Clinical Support System – Universities

Details:

The purpose of the program is to provide resources to graduate-level students in medical (MD/DO), physician assistant (PA), nurse practitioner (NP) and other eligible nursing programs (clinical nurse specialists (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA), certified nurse-midwives (CNM) practices) receive the theoretical knowledge and practical training required for them to treat opioid use disorders (OUD) and prescribe medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in office-based settings upon graduation and receipt of licensure. In addition, this grant program is focused on the broader integration of substance use disorder (SUD) related education into the medical and nursing curricula of the respective academic institution.

Funding Information

  • Estimated Total Available Funding: Up to $1,400,000.
  • Estimated Number of Awards: Up to 6 awards.
  • Estimated Award Amount: Up to $245,000 per year, per award.

Period of Performance

  • Up to 3 years.

Allowable Activities

Allowable activities are an allowable use of grant funds but are not required. Allowable activities may include:

  • Develop a recruitment and retention strategy for SUD treatment practitioners.
  • Develop and provide training and other resource materials for a variety of audiences and populations (e.g., clinical supervisors, human resource managers, administrators, state/territory agency staff, front-line counseling staff, racial/ethnic and sexual/gender minority populations, etc.).

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible applicants are domestic public and private non-profit entities, states, political subdivisions of states, Indian tribes or tribal organizations (as such terms are defined in section 5304 of title 25), health facilities, or programs operated by or in accordance with a contract or grant with the Indian Health Service.

Examples of eligible entities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Medical schools, physician assistant schools, and schools of nursing (programs for nurse practitioners).
  • HBCUs, TCUs, HSI, and AANAPI-serving institutions.
  • Urban Indian Organizations and consortia of tribes or tribal organizations.
