Colorado Safe Routes to School (CSRTS) was established in 2004 in anticipation of Federal legislation that was passed in 2005. The purpose was
- To enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school;
- To make walking and bicycling to school safe and more appealing; and
- To facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects that will improve safety, and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution in the vicinity of schools.
In Colorado today, about 17% of Colorado K-8 students are walking and bicycling to and from school with rates of 20% to 30% or higher in schools with active SRTS programs.
Funding Information
There are two types of awards for FY 2023, infrastructure grants and non-infrastructure grants. Each of these have a separate funding maximum and minimum. In total, the CSRTS program has approximately $5M to award to successful applicants.
- Infrastructure (INF) Grants: The minimum grant award is $100,000 and a maximum of $750,000 of SRTS Funding per project.
- Non-Infrastructure (NIF) Grants: The minimum grant award is $5000. There is no maximum award for this type of project.
Eligibility Criteria
- Local government-financed entity: any organization, group, or entity other than a political subdivision that:
- Is composed of members that are political subdivisions or who are officials or employees of political subdivisions; and
- Derives any of its annual operating budget from dues, contributions, or other payments received from political subdivisions.
- Political subdivision: county, city and county, city, town, service authority, school district, local improvement district, law enforcement authority, water, sanitation, fire protection, metropolitan, irrigation, drainage, or other special district, or any other kind of municipal, quasi-municipal, or public corporation organized pursuant to law.
