Denver’s Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE), through the Healthy Food for Denver’s Kids Initiative, is seeking proposals to improve healthy food access and food-based education for Denver’s children, especially ages birth to five years old, to ensure they have reliable access to healthy, nutritious food and food education that helps them grow, learn, and thrive for life.

The City and County of Denver are investing in programs, projects, and activities for non-profits, agencies of local government, and Denver schools to improve child food security and wellness through Healthy Food Access, Nutrition Education, and Federal Nutrition Assistance programs.
Funding Information
Organizations may request funding between $100,000-$1,000,000 per year (but may not exceed more than 50% of their annual operating budget).
Eligibility Criteria
All organizations must meet the following requirements:
- Be a nonprofit organization; a public school in Denver; or an agency of local government (City and County of Denver, including Denver Public Schools) that provides healthy food access for youth, hands-on food education; or local food procurement
- Organization must serve youth ages 18 and under, either through direct service/care or by partnering with organizations that serve this age group
- Funded activities must take place in Denver for Denver youth
- Organization must have at least 12 months of operations and an active 501(c)(3) status at the time of application if a nonprofit
- The organization must have an annual operating budget of at least $200,000 (i.e., organizations cannot apply for more than 50% of their annual operating budget)
- HFDK is committed to improving the health of Denver’s kids. All funded organizations must be able to participate in the evaluation of their project (in partnership with an HFDK-funded evaluation contractor).
- If an organization is not eligible under these requirements, partnerships with eligible, lead organizations are encouraged.
Ideally, HFDK is looking for organizations that:
- Focus on serving youth birth-5 years old, either through direct service/care or by partnering with organizations that serve this age group
- Have extensive existing partnerships to support licensed child care homes and centers and to support smaller organizations (including both licensed child care and informal child care providers such as Family, Friends, and Neighbor (FFN) care providers)
- Operate with multiple sites or partners
- Are representative of the community they serve, including being led by people of color and using multilingual communication
- Organizations that have successfully improved nutritious food access and nutrition education in under-resourced communities.
